About Me

About Ant

I'm Ant — a psychotherapist based near Cambridge, working with clients online and in person. I trained at the National College of Hypnosis and Psychotherapy, a UKCP-accredited provider, and I'm an advanced trainee qualified to practise under supervision. I'm also a qualified and registered hypnotherapist.

I came to this work through my own experience of therapy — over a decade of it, at different points in my life. I know what it is to sit in the client's chair: the initial uncertainty, the gradual trust, and what it actually feels like when something shifts. That experience shapes how I work more than anything else I've learned.

Before training as a psychotherapist, I worked in elderly care and in a hospital setting. That background gave me a genuine appreciation for people who carry a lot — professionally and personally — often without much room to set it down.

In sessions, I offer space to slow down and look at things properly. The name Ponder and Pause is deliberate — there's real value in unhurried reflection, and I try to bring that into the room. The work is warm and collaborative, with room for humour as well as the harder conversations. I draw on integrative and pluralistic approaches, and where it's appropriate, I use clinical hypnosis — not the theatrical kind, but as one of many ways to work with the deeper, less conscious parts of experience.

I work with a wide range of people, but I find myself particularly drawn to professionals — doctors, nurses, vets, dentists, lawyers, teachers, scientists, carers — people who are very capable in their working lives and who often bring that same high-functioning, self-sufficient quality into therapy, sometimes at the expense of actually being heard. That said, I'm genuinely open to working with anyone who feels this might be the right space for them.

I'm at an advanced stage of a UKCP-accredited training, which means I practise under regular clinical supervision, carry full professional insurance, and am registered with the ICO. If you're new to therapy, or wondering what working with a trainee actually means in practice — please do ask. I'm happy to talk it through.

Understanding the Work

What is Hypno-Psychotherapy?

Hypno-Psychotherapy is a recognised integrative modality that weaves together the depth of psychodynamic and relational psychotherapy with the focused inner access that hypnosis makes possible. For thoughtful people who have found that talking alone only goes so far, it opens a different kind of door.

Hypno-Psychotherapy is a clinically practised, integrative form of therapy — worlds apart from the theatrical performances you may have seen on stage or television. Stage hypnosis is entertainment, relying on highly suggestible volunteers in a charged social setting. Clinical hypnosis is something altogether different: a collaborative, guided process in which the therapist helps you enter a state of relaxed, focused attention.

Within that state, the more defended, analytical part of the mind quietens just enough to allow deeper psychological material to become accessible. This is then worked with therapeutically — with care, skill, and the same relational attentiveness as any other form of depth therapy. You are always aware, always in control, and always yourself.

Yes — you are entirely in control throughout. One of the most enduring misconceptions about hypnosis is that the person hypnotised becomes passive, or surrenders their will to the therapist. This is simply not the case. Hypnosis is a state of focused inner attention, not unconsciousness, and not compliance.

You cannot be made to say, do, or reveal anything you would not choose to. Your values, boundaries, and sense of self remain fully intact. Many clients describe the experience as feeling pleasantly absorbed — similar to being so engaged in a book or piece of music that the outside world temporarily recedes. The therapeutic relationship is one of genuine collaboration throughout.

Most people describe it as deeply restful — a quality of inner stillness that feels both alert and unhurried at once. Thoughts slow down. The body settles. There is often a noticeable sense of mental spaciousness, as though things that felt crowded or urgent begin to feel more workable from a different vantage point.

It is worth noting that people experience hypnotic states differently. Some notice vivid imagery; others simply feel calm and reflective. Neither is more valid than the other. The state is not fixed or uniform — it shifts with you, session to session, as the therapeutic work deepens. What most clients remark on is how ordinary and gentle it feels, and how different that is from what they had imagined.

Yes. There is a substantial and growing body of research supporting the clinical effectiveness of hypnosis for a range of psychological presentations — including anxiety, trauma processing, chronic stress, and patterns of thought and behaviour that have proven resistant to change through talking alone. It is recognised by the British Psychological Society and the American Psychological Association as a legitimate evidence-informed clinical tool.

Rather than sitting alongside talk therapy, Hypno-Psychotherapy integrates hypnosis within a psychotherapeutic framework. The hypnotic state does not replace the relationship, the reflection, or the depth of understanding that characterises good therapy — it enriches them. It allows the therapeutic conversation to reach levels of experience that are often difficult to access through conscious verbal exploration alone.
